Goltsov vs. Vassell

Heavyweight Co-feature
Denis Goltsov (32-8) vs Linton Vassell (23-8)

Goltsov had Renan Ferreira right where he wanted him—until he didn’t. After cruising to the 2023 heavyweight tournament championship off three first-round finishes, Goltsov had Ferreira in full mount with 30 seconds left in the first round. He could’ve ended it then and there but instead gave Ferreira something to worry about in round two.

Needless to say, Ferreira faced his fears when he starched Goltsov (32-8) with a right cross to the ear 26 seconds into the next round. In an instant, Goltsov’s monstrous run was over — or maybe it was just beginning.

With 26 finishes on his record, “The Russian Bogatyr” is one the scariest heavyweights in the field this season. Few fighters can beat him, let alone survive the first round with him. Over the years, he’s shown flashes of brilliance, but he started to put everything together last season. He boxes well and uses his reach effectively. On the ground, his brabo and ezekiel chokes are a threat to watch for.

There aren’t a lot of 40-year-olds who can kick ass like Vassell. The former Bellator heavyweight title challenger comes into the PFL tournament on a five-fight win streak with victories over Moldavsky and Tyrell Fortune. Before PFL bought Bellator, Vassell was lined up to rematch Bader for the heavyweight title. Now, “Big Swarm” has his eyes set on another belt.

Goltsov (32-8) would be wise to feel out Vassell early and keep the fight on the feet. The Englishman has vicious ground and pound and can end the fight with his heavy strikes. If Goltsov stays light on his feet, he can control the fight with his jab until he lands something worthwhile. Vassell, however, isn’t going to sit quietly and get picked apart. Taking a page out of Ferreira’s book, Vassell surprises Goltsov early and pounces en route to the TKO stoppage.
