Sherdog’s Top 10: Epic Fails

Number 9

9. Serra’s Butt-Scootin’ Boogie
EliteXC “Primetime”
May 31, 2008 | Newark, N.J.

As the brother of a former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in his own right, the future held some promise for Serra.

At 7-2 and with all but one of his victories by submission, he looked to be in decent shape career-wise entering EliteXC “Primetime.” He was matched up with Matt Makowski, a 2-0 prospect with some legitimate striking skills. Serra tasted those skills early, eating a few big shots before securing a takedown and progressing to Makowski’s back with a fair amount of time to work in the first round. He was unable to secure anything and spent the rest of the round getting beaten up at range and in the clinch.

By the time a minute had passed in the second round, it was clear that Serra had little left to offer. Two more minutes led to Serra eating a shot and flopping to his back, for which referee Kevin Mulhall deducted a point and enforced a warning. A few more futile seconds led to this, a moment that truly defies explanation: Serra was unable or unwilling to get back up. He never fought again.
