Sherdog’s Top 10: Worst Decisions

Number 7

7. Michael Bisping vs. Matt Hamill
UFC 75 “Champion vs. Champion”
Sept. 8, 2007 | London

Bisping today ranks among MMA’s top villains, but just when did he become a fighter many love to hate? Looking back, his controversial victory over Hamill at UFC 75 seems like a pretty solid launching point.

Known for his wrestling, Hamill caught Bisping off-guard with improved standup. He rocked and bloodied the Brit in the first round with a right hand and landed the more meaningful shots throughout the stanza. In addition to out-landing his opponent on the feet, Hamill scored a pair of takedowns in the first round.

It tightened up after that. Over the course of the final 10 minutes, striking totals were close to even, while Hamill landed two takedowns each in rounds two and three. While many, including UFC President Dana White, felt that Hamill deserved the nod, judges Jeff Mullen and Cecil Peoples saw it 29-28 for “The Count,” giving Bisping a split decision triumph. The verdict was not well received even in Bisping’s home country, as many at the O2 Arena booed upon hearing the official announcement.

“Mike did a good job,” Hamill said. “He beat me fair and square, and I give him a lot of credit. I thought I won the fight.”

Not surprisingly, Bisping felt differently, but his reaction when asked if he thought he won the decision did little to garner any new fans.

“Do you want to go three rounds? Of course I won the decision,” he said. “Get the [expletive] out of here. Get that smile off your face.”

With that, a heel was born.
