“Wonderboy” executed a clinic in the UFC Fight Night 183 headliner, utilizing crisp straight punches, a toolbox of kicks and confounding movement to capture a unanimous decision triumph over Geoff Neal on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. In the promotion’s final fight of a tumultuous 2020, Thompson sent a message that he is still a dangerous force in the welterweight division.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 183, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

171: Significant strikes landed by Thompson, a UFC career best for “Wonderboy” and the eighth most in UFC welterweight history. By comparison, Neal landed 85. Thompson outlanded his opponent 25 to 7 in Round 1, 30 to 15 in Round 2, 33 to 15 in Round 3, 34 to 15 in Round 4 and 49 to 33 in Round 5.

406: Significant strikes attempted by Thompson, more than twice the output of Neal, who attempted 179 significant strikes.

124: Significant head strikes landed by Thompson. Neal, meanwhile, landed 71.

41: Significant body strikes for Thompson; Neal land just eight.

2-2-1: Career record for Thompson in fights that go a full 25 minutes. In addition to Neal, Thompson also defeated Rory MacDonald in a five-round bout. “Wonderboy” has lost five-round matchups against Darren Till and Tyron Woodley while also battling Woodley to a majority draw.

4:53: Total control time in Round 3 for Jose Aldo in the bantamweight co-main event against Marlon Vera. The former featherweight champion took his foe’s back and remained attached for the majority of the frame, which proved critical in a bout the Nova Uniao star won by a trio of 29-28 scorecards.

32: Total strikes by which Vera outlanded Aldo. While Vera outlanded his foe by a 92-to-60 count in total strikes, he only held a 46-to-44 edge in significant strikes.

55: Significant strikes landed by Kalinn Williams in a unanimous decision loss to Michel Pereira. Pereira, meanwhile, landed 44 significant strikes in the middleweight tilt. “Demolidor” also landed the bout’s only two takedowns in Round 3.

6: Finishes in UFC competition for Rob Font, who defeated former bantamweight title challenger Marlon Moraes by technical knockout 3:47 into the opening round of their featured clash. That total ties him with Pedro Munhoz for fourth most ever at 135 pounds behind only T.J. Dillashaw (eight), Marlon Vera (eight) and Urijah Faber (seven).

78: Combined significant strike deficit for Moraes in his last three UFC defeats, which all came by KO/TKO at the hands of Font (-21), Cory Sandhagen (-24) and Henry Cejudo (-33).

4: Consecutive wins for Marcin Tybura, tying him with Francis Ngannou, Curtis Blaydes and Ciryl Gane for the longest active streak in the UFC’s heavyweight division. Tybura rallied for a technical knockout win against Greg Hardy at the 4:31 mark of Round 2.

18: Significant ground strikes landed by Tybura, all during the finishing sequence in Round 2. In Hardy’s previous seven UFC bouts, his opponents landed a combined three significant ground strikes against him. Coincidentally, all three of those were landed by Allen Crowder in a disqualification victory over Hardy in the former NFL star’s Octagon debut.

11: Career reversals for Anthony Pettis, which ties him with Dustin Ortiz for second-most in UFC history. Louis Smolka is No. 1 all-time with 13. The former UFC lightweight champion executed one reversal in a decision triumph over Alex Morono in a preliminary welterweight encounter.

3: Consecutive victories for Pannie Kianzad, who outpointed Sijara Eubanks in a preliminary 135-pound affair. That checks in as the second longest active winning streak in the UFC women’s bantamweight division. Reigning champion Amanda Nunes owns the longest streak with nine straight victories.

89: Combined significant strikes landed by Kianzad in Rounds 2 and 3 after an opening stanza in which she landed just three. Eubanks, meanwhile, landed 42 significant strikes over the final 10 minutes of the bout.

12: Takedowns landed in 16 attempts for Deron Winn in a three-round verdict against Antonio Arroyo in a 195-pound catchweight matchup. Winn took his foe down four times apiece in each frame, which helped offset a deficit of 25 significant strikes.

120: Significant strikes landed by Tafon Nchukwi in his first UFC foray, a three-round verdict against Jamie Pickett at middleweight. By comparison, Pickett landed 40 significant strikes.

57: Significant clinch strikes landed by Nchukwi. Pickett, meanwhile, landed just one. Nchukwi also held a 49-to-8 advantage in significant body strikes landed.

14: Career submission triumphs among 16 professional victories for Jimmy Flick, who tapped out Cody Durden with a flying triangle choke in his Octagon debut in a 125-pound contest.

3: Flying triangle choke finishes in UFC history. Flick joined Pablo Garza and Godofredo Castro as the only fighters to utilize the maneuver in the Octagon.

4: Takedowns landed in five attempts over Rounds 1 and 2 for Christos Giagos in a unanimous decision triumph against Carlton Minus in a 160-pound catchweight affair.

1: Takedown landed in 10 attempts for Giagos in Round 3. “The Spartan” accepted the bout on three days’ notice as a replacement for Rick Glenn, and it showed as he fatigued badly over the final five minutes. Advertisement
