Sherdog Fantasy MMA: September 2023 Standings

The first month of the inaugural Sherdog staff fantasy MMA season is in the books, and it’s a one-horse race so far.

September Standings

Ben Duffy: 31 points (Strickland 31)
Keith Shillan: 2 points (Kape 2)
Devin Tejada: -1 points (Holland -1)
Jay Pettry: -13 points (Volkov 8, Adesanya -21)

With only three Ultimate Fighting Championship events between the league’s Labor Day launch and the end of September, Team Duffy is out to a commanding early lead, thanks entirely to Sean Strickland’s masterful performance against Team Pettry’s Israel Adesanya at UFC 293. Strickland earned bonus points for capturing the title, for the pay-per-view main event victory and for the head-to-head win over another team’s fighter.

Unfortunately, “The Last Stylebender” wasn’t quite done yet costing Team Pettry points, as his guilty plea last week for drunk driving constituted a 20-point penalty, more than enough to erase Alexander Volkov’s good work in the UFC 293 co-main event. The other biggest fight of the month for our purposes, the Alexa Grasso-Valentina Shevchenko flyweight title rematch at “Noche UFC” on Sept. 16, ended in a draw, a disappointment for just about everyone involved—including Team Shillan, which could have seized the top spot with a Shevchenko win.

Next month there are three UFC events scheduled, with plenty of fantasy roster members in headlining and main card slots. Look out for fighters like Islam Makhachev, Grant Dawson, Edson Barboza and Magomed Ankalaev to score big for—or against—the coaches who drafted them.
