Coach John Kavanagh Questions How Nurmagomedov Will React if He Loses A Round To McGregor

The UFC 229 press conference has now concluded with Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov finally coming face-to-face with former champ, Irish megastar Conor McGregor. While the atmosphere was lacking due to the fact no fans were allowed to enter, the event itself was entertaining and definitely drove anticipation up a notch for the fight next month.

The undefeated Russian has been impeccable during his time inside the Octagon, not losing even a single round.

McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh, who is preparing his fighter for the world-class grappling of Nurmagomedov, has pondered how the Russian will react if the fight doesn’t go as planned, especially if “The Notorious” can keep the fight standing.

“I don’t think Khabib has lost a single round in his UFC career,” Kavanagh said. “If you do lose a round are you going to be able to come back out with that same level of confidence in the next round? There’s a lot of interesting things to be played out in this fight.”

However, Kavanagh also acknowledged that while his pupil is used to working his striking game against fighters who are trying to take him down, Nurmagomedov will be operating at a higher level than anyone McGregor has faced before.

“Besides the Nate fight and the [Jose] Aldo fight was so quick that there was not a lot to take away from it, [McGregor is] generally facing someone that he’s better on the feet and he’s picking them off and they’re trying to take him down,” Kavanagh said. “That’s been the standard fight that he’s had. Whether it’s Mendes or even the Eddie fight, a few times Eddie got him on the fence and was trying to take him down but this is against somebody that does that better than anybody that he’s face before. We have to be straight about that. I think it’s going to be a lot of the positions that we’ve seen him in before but it’s against somebody who, like I said, is doing it at a very high level.”
