Simon Marcus Retains Middleweight Title Over Dustin Jacoby at Glory 30
While the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, just outside of
Los Angeles, may not have been packed its gills, Glory delivered
another event loaded with action inside the ring. In the main event
of Glory 30: Los Angeles, Simon Marcus retained his middleweight
title by outpointing Dustin
Jacoby over five thrilling rounds.
Marcus (44-2-2, 24 KOs) dropped Jacoby late in the first after he landed a glancing right to the top of the head. Jacoby, a former Bellator and UFC veteran, protested the call but it was a legitimate knockdown. Jacoby was relentless throughout the contest but the Canadian was superb with his head movement and counter attacks, thwarting most of what the Denver-based brawler threw at him.
Marcus nearly ended the fight moments into the fifth when he
crashed his right shin into Jacoby’s liver, but the challenger was
resilient and barely beat the count. Jacoby (9-7, 7 KOs) wound up
finishing the fight and tried his best to score a last-second
knockout but it never materialized. Marcus won the unanimous
decision via tallies of 47-46 and 48-45 (twice) to retain his
belt.
Richard Abraham did just enough in the finals of the four-man same-night welterweight tournament as he edged Cameroon native Francois Ambang via split decision. The fight was as close as they come, but the Illinois-based brawler landed the harder, cleaner shots and was awarded the nod on scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 28-29.
Abraham (10-3, 4 KOs) got to the finals of the tourney by dropping and out-pointing Casey Greene in the opening round. He won via tallies of 29-27 (twice) 30-26. Ambang (15-6, 6 KOs), meanwhile, got past Mexico native Daniel Morales via unanimous nod as well, but by the margin of 30-27 on all three official cards.
The co-featured bout of the evening ended in spectacular fashion as Belgium’s Marat Grigorian knocked Djime into orbit with a highlight reel knockout in the first. After Djime (51-14-4, 18 KOs) backed into the ropes, he was knocked completely out when a Grigorian right head kick detonated on his face. The Frenchman fell face first onto the canvas, prompting Marcos Rosales to not even bother counting. The end came at 1:56 of the fight, giving Grigorian (46-9-2, 27 KOs) one of the best knockouts of the year.
