By the Numbers: UFC 285

Jon Jones made it look easy.

In his first fight since February 2020, “Bones” rolled through Ciryl Gane as if he wasn’t there, submitting the Frenchman 2:04 into Round 1 of the UFC 285 headliner at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night. With the victory, Jones captured the vacant heavyweight crown on the heels of a lengthy reign at 205 pounds.

Jones wasn’t the only story at UFC 285. In the evening’s co-main event, Alexa Grasso authored an “Upset of the Year” candidate by submitting Valentina Shevchenko in the fourth round of their flyweight title clash. Grasso’s victory ended Shevchenko’s remarkable 125-pound reign after seven successful defenses. While an immediate rematch could be in store, Grasso will enjoy her moment after besting one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in women’s MMA.

2:04: Time of Jones’ victory, making it the third-fastest submission triumph in UFC heavyweight championship history.

2: Takedowns landed in two attempts for Jones in that 2:04 of Octagon time. “Bones” landed two takedowns combined in his last two light heavyweight bouts against Dominick Reyes and Thiago Santos — which spanned a total of 50 minutes.

8: Fighters to win UFC titles in two different weight classes. Jones joins Conor McGregor, Amanda Nunes, Henry Cejudo, Daniel Cormier, B.J. Penn, Randy Couture and Georges St. Pierre in this exclusive group.

18: Heavyweight champions in UFC history after Jones captured the vacant belt on Saturday night.

15: Victories in title fights for Jones, the most in UFC history.

19: Fight unbeaten streak for Jones, the longest of its kind in the UFC and one that dates back to March 21, 2010. The lone blemish during that time was a victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 that was overturned to a no contest.

3: Mexican-born champions currently in the UFC. With her upset victory, Grasso joins flyweight champ Brandon Moreno and interim featherweight king Yair Rodriguez as title holders from the country. Grasso is also the third women’s flyweight champion in UFC history, joining Shevchenko and Nicco Montano as the only women to hold the 125-pound strap.

26: Professional bouts without a submission loss for Shevchenko. Grasso became the first person to submit “Bullet” in her 27th MMA appearance.

87: Significant strikes landed by Shevchenko. Grasso, meanwhile, landed 59. Shevchenko outlanded her foe 26 to 24 in Round 1, 12 to 7 in Round 2, 27 to 15 in Round 3 and 22 to 13 in Round 4. Grasso, however, did hold a 182-to-167 edge in total strikes landed.

4: Takedowns landed in six attempts for Shevchenko, which allowed her to secure 5:24 of control time. Grasso failed on both of her takedown attempts and logged 1:22 of control time.

5: Consecutive finishes in UFC competition for Shavkat Rakhmonov, who submitted Geoff Neal with a standing rear-naked choke 4:17 into Round 3 of their catchweight bout. That ties him with heavyweight Sergei Pavlovich for the longest active finishing streak within the Las Vegas-based promotion.

1: Welterweight in UFC history to begin his career with five consecutive finishes after Rakhmonov accomplished the feat on Saturday night. He also joins Vicente Luque, Thiago Alves and Matt Brown as the only welterweights in the promotion to earn five straight finishes at any point in their career.

113: Significant strikes landed by Rakhmonov. Neal, meanwhile, landed 69. Rakhmonov outlanded his opponent 43 to 29 in Round 1, 35 to 20 in Round 2 and 35 to 20 in Round 3.

39: Significant body strikes for Rakhmonov. By comparison, Neal landed just four significant strikes to the body.

4: Takedowns landed in 12 attempts for Mateusz Gamrot in a split-decision triumph against Jalin Turner at lightweight. “Gamer” also secured 6:52 of control time and held an 89-to-62 advantage in total strikes to garner a split-decision win and end Turner’s five-bout finishing streak in UFC competition.

26: Takedowns landed by Gamrot in seven UFC appearances.

40: Significant strikes landed by Turner. By comparison, Gamrot landed 29. Turner also had the fight’s only knockdown in Round 1.

2:54: Time of Bo Nickal’s Round 1 submission victory over Jamie Pickett in his UFC debut. That checks in as the most time the three-time NCAA national champion wrestler has spent in the cage in four professional outings. His previous three victories lasted a combined 2:27.

.880: Significant striking accuracy for Cody Garbrandt in a unanimous decision triumph against Trevin Jones at bantamweight. “No Love” carefully picked his spots while landing 22 of 25 attempts over three rounds. Jones, meanwhile, struggled to find the mark in landing nine of 33 significant strikes — a 27 percent success rate.

37: Significant strikes by which Dricus Du Plessis outlanded Derek Brunson during the decisive second round of their preliminary middleweight encounter. Brunson’s corner threw in the towel at the 4:59 mark of Round 2. The opening stanza was better for Brunson, as he landed a takedown and logged 2:28 of control time.

205: Total strikes landed by Amanda Ribas in a unanimous decision triumph over Viviane Araujo at flyweight. By comparison, Araujo landed 86 total strikes. Ribas also held a 98-to-46 advantage in significant strikes.

48: Significant clinch strikes — out of 77 total — landed by Marc-Andre Barriault in the second-round of his technical knockout victory over Julian Marquez at middleweight. Marquez landed 34 significant strikes and 12 in the clinch before succumbing to his foe’s barrage of offense at the 4:12 mark of Round 2.

4: Consecutive victories for Ian Garry, tying him with four others for the second-longest active winning streak in the UFC’s welterweight division. Michel Pereira is No. 1 at 170 pounds with five straight wins. Garry defeated Kenan Song via third-round TKO in a preliminary matchup.

127: Significant strikes landed by Garry, the most of his four-bout UFC tenure. By comparison, Song landed 55. The Irish prospect landed 58 significant strikes to the head, 36 to the body and 33 to the legs of his opponent.

30: Significant strikes by which Tabatha Ricci outlanded former strawweight title challenger Jessica Penne in a preliminary 115-pound clash. “Baby Shark” also held an 81-to-19 edge in total strikes and secured four of five takedown attempts before submitting her foe with an armbar at the 2:14 mark of Round 2.

298: Significant strike deficit for Penne during her UFC tenure. While compiling a 3-5 Octagon record, Penne has only outlanded one of her opponents. This occurred when she held a `12-to-8 edge in significant strikes in a first-round armbar win over Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC 265.

11: Takedowns landed in 21 attempts for Loik Radzhabov in a unanimous decision triumph over Esteban Ribovics at lightweight. The Professional Fighters League veteran also logged 7:39 of control time compared to just 31 seconds for his opponent.
