The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday made a splash in Copenhagen, Denmark, with a slew of surprising performances on the UFC Fight Night 160 main card. The event featured a rare submission that seems commonplace for one fighter, a “Hulk” who only wants to smash and a bantamweight who keeps springing major upsets.

THE GREAT DANES: In the UFC’s debut in Denmark, two fighters from the host country appeared on the card. Mark O. Madsen and Nicolas Dalby both won their fights.

NO SUCCESS ON THE ROAD: Five Americans took on Eurasian counterparts at this event, and of those five, only Jared Cannonier came out with a victory.

MAIN ATTRACTION FOR A REASON: Excluding the no-contest from UFC Fight Night 159, after 31 main events in 2019, over two-thirds of them have now ended by stoppage following Cannonier’s second-round knockout of Jack Hermansson. This is substantially higher than the promotion’s average finish rate of about 54 percent.

IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MADSEN WORLD: With his first-round drubbing of Danilo Belluardo, Madsen remained undefeated at 9-0. “The Olympian” has a perfectly even distribution for his methods of victory, with three knockouts, three submissions and another three wins by judges’ verdict.

I THINK IT’S GRATUITOUS, BUT WHATEVER: Ion Cutelaba overwhelmed Khalil Rountree with vicious strikes, picking up the knockout just over halfway through the opening period. In his 15 wins, “The Hulk” accounts for 80 percent of those by knockout. He has still only won one fight on the scorecards, and 13 of his 14 stoppage wins have come inside the first round.

IN DEATH, A SHOULDER CHOKE HAS A NAME, AND HIS NAME IS VON PREUX: Ovince St. Preux tapped Michal Oleksiejczuk with a Von Flue choke in the second round. “OSP” accounts for four of the six such chokes in UFC history. No other fighter has pulled off more than one in a major MMA promotion.

SUBMISSION SAINT: By picking up his fifth submission as a light heavyweight, St. Preux has tied Jon Jones, Glover Teixeira and Misha Cirkunov for the most submission wins in UFC history at 205 pounds. He also has one win by tapout in a 210-pound catchweight affair after opponent Marcos Rogerio de Lima missed weight.

OVINCE ST. CASH: St. Preux scored a “Performance of the Night” bonus by submitting Oleksiejczuk. His last four victories have now been accompanied by post-fight bonuses.

PRETTY TERRIFIC COMPANY: St. Preux now has finished nine opponents in the division, good for the fourth-most in promotional history. Only Jones, Teixeira and Chuck Liddell have more stoppage wins at 205 pounds in the UFC.

THAT’S THE WELSH WRECKING MACHINE: Needing just 17 seconds to flatten Alen Amedovski, John Phillips picked up the third-fastest finish in modern UFC middleweight history. The two that came quicker were Mark Weir’s 10-second knockout of Eugene Jackson at UFC 38 in 2002 and Terry Martin’s 14-second demolition of Jorge Rivera at UFC 67 in 2007.

SWANSEA SMASHER: Following his stoppage of Amedovski, 20 of Phillips’ 22 victories have now come by knockout, including 18 in the opening round.

GLADIATORIAL PADDING: Giga Chikadze’s previous seven wins came over opponents with a combined record of 3-57. Brandon Davis was the first fighter with a winning record that Chikadze has defeated.

STOP SLEEPING ON LINA: Lina Lansberg scored a significant +345 betting upset when she defeated Macy Chiasson by decision. This is the second time in 2019 that she has come in as a +300 underdog or above and picked up a win, previously beating -400 favorite Tonya Evinger at UFC Fight Night 153 in June. She is the first fighter this year to earn multiple upsets of this magnitude inside the Octagon.

A TRUE CAGE WARRIOR: Jack Shore remained unbeaten as a professional when he tapped Nohelin Hernandez with a third-round rear-naked choke. Across his 12 career victories, he has finished 11 opponents.

NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN: Coming into UFC Fight Night 160, Amedovski had never been finished (nine fights), Chikadze had never won a fight on the scorecards (nine fights) and Chiasson had never been defeated (five fights).

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH MARCUS ALMEIDA: After his first career loss to Rashid Magomedov in 2015, Gilbert Burns changed his walkout music to “Medley” by Brazilian artist Buchecha. In his nine uses of the song, Burns has won seven times, including each of his last four.

THERE IS A LOVELY COUNTRY: As the first Danish fighter to compete inside the Octagon in Denmark, Dalby appropriately walked out to the National Anthem of Denmark, as recorded by his fiancée, Dzifa Adjo Akpalu. Dalby went on to beat Alex Oliveira by unanimous decision.
