The Ultimate Fighting Championship kicked out the press and the viewing public from the UFC Apex to film a secret show in front of Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg. While even the families of the competitors were reportedly barred from attending, those fighting still performed with a modicum of success. UFC Fight Night 211 featured a savvy striker snaring a snappy sub, a BJJ grappler who fell in love with his hands and rough sledding for a heavy-handed Canadian.

Effective If Not Spectacular: Over the course of five rounds, Xiaonan Yan did enough to earn the nod from two of three judges. Every one of her seven UFC victories has come by decision, placing her one behind the strawweight division’s record of eight held by Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Carla Esparza.

Chasing Joanna Violence: After nine bouts in the Octagon, Yan has scored with 752 significant strikes. She now holds the fifth-highest such total in women’s 115-pound history, even though all the ladies above her have competed far more times than she has in the UFC.

A Draw Was Probably the Right Call: The majority verdict in favor of Yan marks only the third time in women’s divisional history where one draw scorecard has been overruled in favor of two for the victor. This previously occurred for Miesha Tate over Sara McMann in 2015, and Carla Esparza over Alexa Grasso in 2019.

The Floor is Always Lava with Dern: In a losing effort, Dern officially attempted two submissions, with both of them occurring in Round 2. Her 15 total attempts pad her lead in the division, while serving as the most in any one single women’s weight category.

11% of the Time, It Works Every Time: For the first time as a UFC fighter, Dern landed multiple takedowns by grounding Yan once the third round and again in the fifth. Even though she succeeded on just two of 11 attempts, the grappling ace managed to lift her exceedingly low accuracy rate to 11.4%.

Rude Streak: Randy Brown finds himself on his longest win streak (four) since joining the promotion in 2016, following a decision win over Francisco Trinaldo. Three of his five career decision victories have come in this stretch, to reduce the overall finish rate of “Rude Boy” to 69%.

Super Tight Choke: In exactly 30 seconds, prohibitive betting favorite Sodiq Yusuff caught Don Shainis with a guillotine choke. “Super Sodiq” had never before landed a submission as a professional.

Beasting 25/8: “Beast Boy” Mike Davis came back after a nearly 21-month layoff to snag a decision victory against Viacheslav Borshchev. The last two wins for Davis have come at the hands of the judges, which account for the only two non-stoppage triumphs in his career.

Dana Said No More Catchweights: The match between Daniel Gustavo Santos and John Castaneda was set at 140 pounds on fight week, and Santos knocked Castaneda out in their meeting. This event is the first in UFC history where multiple bouts scheduled outside of standard weight classes ended by knockout.

Is the BJJ Title a Misdirection? Lifting his finish rate to 83% with a knockout of Canadian Jesse Ronson, “Netto BJJ” earned his first win since 2018 in the process. He has not performed a submission since 2014.

Healy Lost Double Bonuses Too: At the hands of Silva, Ronson suffered his fifth loss as a UFC fighter, to continue his winless streak of six overall including a no contest. While John Alessio went 0-5 in his various efforts in the UFC, Pat Healy also went winless in six with a no contest of his own.

80% In: A rear-naked choke from Brendan Allen ended Krzysztof Jotko’s night early, with the tap coming in the opening frame. “All In” boosted his career finish rate to 80% with his tapout of the Polish vet.

Cyborg and Nunes Skew It Slightly: The finish rate among all women across UFC history sits at a paltry 37.9%, which is well below the overall company average just under 53%. For all UFC women’s bouts contested above 135 pounds, that rate leaps up to 56.3% following Chelsea Chandler’s knockout of Julija Stoliarenko.

You Know Who Landed the Early Ones: Chandler vs. Stoliarenko, due to its short-notice nature, was set as a 140-pound catchweight affair. Just five pre-planned women’s catchweight bouts have taken place throughout UFC history, with four of those at 140 pounds. All of those at the 140-pound mark have ended by knockout.

Still Nothing but a Number: Guido Cannetti throttled Randy Costa in 64 seconds with a rear-naked choke to put himself on his first win streak since 2013. The 42-year-old from Buenos Aires celebrates a stoppage rate of 80%, with an equal number of knockouts and subs.

Light the Fuse: Win or lose, Costa has still never even fought to a third round. His appearance against Cannetti is his 10th as a professional.

Never Say Never Again: Coming into UFC Fight Night 211, Yan had never fought beyond the third round (19 fights), Shainis had never been submitted (15 fights) and Borshchev had never dropped consecutive bouts (eight fights).

No Man Should Have All That Power: In an unusual occurrence for walkout music, both Yusuff and Shainis picked tracks performed by Kanye West. Yusuff powerfully choked out his foe hurry after walking out to “Power,” while Shainis faded fast following his use of “Fade.”

Not a Stranglehold on the Lead: The most frequently used walkout tune of “Gonna Fly Now” by Bill Conti from the “Rocky” soundtrack is once again tied as the winningest in UFC history, following Ilir Latifi’s selection of the tune ahead of his triumph over Alexey Oleynik. The song shares the lead with “Stranglehold” by Ted Nugent for the most accompanied victories.
