Gracie and Ken Shamrock
became the first two inductees to be enshrined in the Ultimate
Fighting Championship Hall of Fame at UFC 45 on Nov. 21, 2003.
Gracie was the cornerstone upon which the UFC was built, a lanky, unassuming Brazilian who introduced the world to his family’s brand of jiu-jitsu and forever altered the face of hand-to-hand combat. He won his first 11 bouts inside the Octagon -- a submission victory over Shamrock included -- and exited the stage with tournament titles at UFC 1, UFC 2 and UFC 4.
Billed as “The World’s Most Dangerous Man,” Shamrock was responsible for the first blemish on Gracie’s ledger, as he battled him to a draw at UFC 5 in April 1995. He later became the UFC’s first superfight champion -- an open weight title that was used prior to the introduction of weight classes. Shamrock coached Season 3 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series and compiled a 7-6-2 record in the UFC, losing four of his last five matches under the organization’s banner.
In more than a decade that has gone by since Gracie and Shamrock were inducted, nine others have joined them in the UFC Hall of Fame: Dan Severn, Randy Couture, Mark Coleman, Chuck Liddell, Charles “Mask” Lewis Jr., Matt Hughes, Tito Ortiz, Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar.
