Round 1

The UFC will be concluding a record-long stretch of 17 consecutive weeks of live events by going home to Las Vegas. After a month’s worth of shows on the road (and down the street), a small crowd at the UFC Apex will enjoy the festivities. The fights start in the bantamweight division, as unbeaten newcomer Rendon (5-0, 0-0 UFC) looks to ply her trade in the Octagon against Brazilian fireplug Vidal (7-1, 1-0 UFC). The first assignment of the night goes to referee Kerry Hatley, and the ladies bump fists together to seal the cage and start the clock. Vidal starts off with a heavy low kick, and Rendon takes it, backs off and absorbs a second one. Rendon steps in to throw hands, and Vidal backpedals and gets off another kick. Rendon looks to tie her up, but the Brazilian pushes off and slings a leg kick. Rendon counters her over the top with a right hand, and Vidal shakes it off and loops a right hand back at her. Rendon looks to advance, only for Vidal to intercept her with a low kick and a speedy one-two. Rendon takes it on the chin and keeps plodding forward, but she does not cut Vidal off and instead is chasing her while Vidal circles. Vidal times a right hook, and Rendon needs to reset but is followed back by “Tractor.” The two engage in a short brawl, with Vidal getting the better of the exchange. Rendon attempts to time a right hand around the guard when Vidal kicks her lead leg, and Vidal shrugs off one counter and fires off another stiff kick. Vidal punches her way into a clinch situation, where Rendon turns her around and presses her weight on her. Unable to get a good position, Rendon pushes off, and Vidal walks her down and throws bombs. Rendon takes a few on the chin and gets backed up to the wall, where Vidal suddenly changes levels in pursuit of a single-leg takedown. Snaking her legs around Rendon’s in pursuit of the takedown, Vidal tries to trip her foe up but is unable to ground her. Rendon regains her balance and shoves Vidal back. The round ends as Rendon peppers Vidal with short knees.

Round 2

The bantamweights casually come together to begin the second round, with Vidal taking the center of the cage only to hop back when Rendon throws a punch at her. Vidal slides out of the way and slaps several leg kicks on the thigh and calf of her opponent, and Rendon ignores them to plod forward. When one kick from Vidal lands, Rendon powers through it and bowls the Brazilian over. As soon as she hits the mat, Vidal searches for a leg lock that turns into a kneebar. When that is not in the right position, she transitions to an inverted heel hook, and Rendon pushes off Vidal’s backside to slide her leg out of danger. Rendon successfully escapes, and the two women get back to their feet. Rendon opens up with a pair of punches that clatter off the guard, and she does get off a single leg kick. Vidal responds with one of her own, and the two bantamweights measure one another with distance shots. Rendon winds up with a big right hand that slams into Vidal’s chest, and Vidal turns away and clutches her breast in serious pain. Hatley incorrectly calls that the strike was a foul, and he allows Vidal to recover – this strike is not banned, and the result should have been a TKO. Instead, Vidal gets a few seconds to recover until someone from outside of the cage shouts to Hatley that the strike is not illegal. Hatley restarts the fight, and Vidal surges into action, as if to thank Hatley for saving her from what should have been a legitimate finish. Vidal swarms her foe with low kicks and punches, swinging with recklessness that ultimately ends up with Rendon taking advantage of the situation and tackling Vidal to the mat. Vidal hits her back and ties up her guard around the waist, while Rendon sits on top of her dropping down occasional ground-and-pound. The Mexican fighter ends the round in the top position, although it should not be ignored that she should have already earned the victory via stoppage. Instead, the fighters reach Round 3.

Round 3

The final round opens up with both ladies throwing leg kicks from a safe range. Vidal leans away from an overhand right and hammers the newcomer’s lead leg with kicks from both sides. Rendon struggles to keep her balance as she nearly gets swept, but she remains upright and tries to look for overhand rights to stop Vidal from peppering her with this long stream of kicks. Vidal swings for the fences and misses the mark with it, allowing Rendon to pop her in the cops with a right hook as Vidal is resetting. Vidal slides to the side to land a kick, and she checks one that comes back her way. Rendon pushes out multiple jabs, which only slow when Vidal blasts her lead wheel with hard kicks. Rendon swings back with a wide punch that shakes up Vidal, and the Brazilian clears out any cobwebs and throws a windmilling punch. Vidal looses a kick, and Rendon grabs it and trips Vidal up to set her on her backside. When Vidal falls to her back, she hunts for a leglock, and Rendon pulls on the cage to maneuver her around to stop it from succeeding. Hatley admonishes her for the foul, but Rendon is already out of the bad position and in Vidal’s guard. “Monster” slowly works from above with stay-busy ground-and-pound, with little power on any individual strike but enough to keep Hatley from standing them up or calling for more action. As Vidal looks to her corner, Rendon slams her in the face with an elbow. Rendon remains heavy on top, thwarting any possible Hail Mary submission setups from her foe and landing shots from above. The fight ends in this position, although it should have ended several minutes ago.

Round 1

Moving over to the strawweight division, a battle between two ladies coming off lengthy layoffs will try to shake any rust off and move forward in the talent-rich division. It will be the first fight for Inoue (14-6, 1-1 UFC) since August 2020, so it’s anyone’s guess how she has developed. While Goldy (6-3, 1-3 UFC) has been out of the Octagon since July 2022, she is the relative bastion of activity compared to her Japanese counterpart. When referee Mark Smith tells the women to fight, they touch gloves and then do just that. Inoue takes the to the middle of the cage, with active footwork from side to side as Goldy just walks her down. Inoue scores a quick punch before skirting out of the way of a counter, and she absorbs a kick on her inner thigh. Goldy comes up short with a head kick, and Inoue does the same. As the two end up clinched, they trade short knees, and Inoue jams her up against the cage wall. Although Goldy explodes out of the position, Inoue wrangles her back up to the wire. Inoue sneaks in a cheeky elbow up top, and she exerts her weight on her opponent. Inoue pops Goldy in the chin with a surprisingly solid shoulder strike, and she gets in an uppercut from close range as well. Inoue looks for a trip attempt, and Goldy remains upright and separates. Inoue paws her in the midsection with a front kick, and Goldy responds with an overhand right. Goldy walks through a kick to smack Inoue with a left and a right, and Inoue no-sells it and responds with a left to the liver. Inoue attacks the body with a kick, and she ignores a low kick to keep Goldy on her heels. When Goldy plants a kick on her foe’s midsection, Inoue crowds her and drills her with a right hand before tying her up. Inoue sets up several knees until Goldy pushes her away, and Inoue runs at her with a knee. Goldy grabs hold of her in an attempt to sling Inoue to the canvas, but the Japanese women is able to keep her footing and lean against the fence. As Inoue attempts a hip toss, the horn sounds.

Round 2

The second round begins with Inoue just as energetic as before. She hops forward, in and out of range as a leg kick comes towards her so that she can knock Goldy back with a one-two. Inoue sits down on a right hand as Goldy advances towards her, and this hurts Goldy and forces her to shoot in for a takedown. Inoue skillfully shuts down the attempt and nearly takes the back, but Goldy is able to keep her off and back to a neutral clinch position. When Goldy pursues a throw, Inoue times this and counters her to throw the Florida native to her back. Inoue moves to the guard, where she stacks Goldy up as Goldy defends with a submission setup from her legs. Inoue jumps over Goldy’s legs but ends up out of position, which allows Goldy to get back to her knees. Inoue tries to change levels and drag Goldy back down with a single, only for Goldy to defend with her back to the cage using a guillotine choke. Inoue ignores the choke, as it is nowhere near tight, and she stands back up and squeezes on Goldy. Goldy muscles her back around, and they both attempt trip takedowns. This time, Goldy is able to plant the Japanese fighter on her back. Inoue sits up and pushes her foot off Goldy’s chest to get enough separation to stand. Inoue places her hands on the floor, and Goldy appears to illegally knee her given that Inoue’s palms appeared to be flat on the mat. Smith warns her about the knee, and Goldy thinks twice about attempting another while Inoue stands. The two grapple in the clinch, trading knees until Goldy hunts for a trip. Inoue staves it off, knees Goldy in the side a few times, and the round concludes.

Round 3

The ladies meet in the middle to engage, and the first strike comes from Inoue in the form of a leg kick. Goldy nails Inoue with a clean right hand, and Inoue fires back to prove she is not shaken up. Inoue slips and moves away from additional punches, and she catches Goldy a few times. One such right hand from Inoue prompts Goldy to pursue a takedown, only for her to push Inoue against the fence and not go anywhere. Inoue separates, and she shuts down a subsequent takedown effort without batting an eye. Goldy lumbers forward with her left hand outstretched, and Inoue walks into it and connects with several punches in rapid succession. Inoue chains a kick into a left hand, and Goldy has to blink it out and paws at her nose. Inoue leaps forward to strike, and Goldy times this advancement with a shot. Inoue gets shoved back to the cage, and Goldy’s attempt otherwise falls flat. The two ladies get off short knees until Inoue breaks off. Goldy pursues her, snatching up one of Inoue’s legs for a possible single, until Inoue recoils it and jams Goldy up with multiple knees. Goldy gets one knee up to the chin, and they both connect with short but effective elbows that force them to split apart. Inoue ducks a punch to land two, and Goldy fails on a takedown but manages to score a right. When clinched up again, the knees come soon thereafter, adding up on strike totals but not having much serious impact. Inoue breaks off and stuffs the takedown that she knows is coming. Inoue pushes off, rips a body shot and stifles another takedown effort. Inoue pushes her opponent back to the wall and starts opening up with body with, only for Goldy to sit down on a final series of punches. The two trade strikes to the bell.

Round 1

The lone heavyweight contest on the card takes place in the prelims, instead of as an unranked matchup featured on the main card above ranked competitors. While Usman (9-2, 2-0 UFC) has a modicum of momentum on his side, having won two straight, he faces a former middleweight in Collier (13-9, 5-8 UFC) that has lost three in a row. The big-bodied gentlemen will be joined in the cage by referee Dan Miragliotta, who is standing by in case something goes awry. There is no interest in a glove touch, as these two want to get right to it. Collier leads the dance with a number of calf kicks, and he swats away the reaching punches from Usman. Collier misses the mark with a head kick, and Usman jabs him in the body. Collier sits down on a big body kick, and a left hand stuns Usman. “The Motor” revs his engine and rushes after a takedown. Collier holds him up and snatches hold of a standing arm-triangle choke to shut down the attempt, but Usman is able to wriggle himself free from the strong submission try. Collier blasts the body with a few knees, and when Usman responds with one, Collier swings an elbow over the top. Usman pushes his man back and belts him with a left hand, but Collier tanks it and throws right back at him. Usman separates and gathers his thoughts, and he winds up with a big right hand. Collier walks him down, jabbing and setting up straight right hands. Usman flails back, and he wings as right hook that buzzes the hair. Collier times a pair of punches and a blistering knee on the chin, and Usman eats it without seeming compromised. Usman scores a big right hand, and Collier shrugs it off and turns his hips into a big kick. Usman dings Collier when Collier throws too hard, but Collier is no worse for wear as he gathers himself and keeps coming forward. Usman prepares heavy counters, and he is beaten to the punch by a few sharp jabs from his opponent. Collier looks for step-in knees to the body to end short combinations, while Usman is largely focused on single strikes. Usman aims a few body shots, and Collier crashes into him while pushing a serious pace. Collier splits the guard with a jab, and he lands a leg kick with an audible thud. Collier sticks his man with a few jabs and dodges the looping counters, and he follows one with a solid right and a left. Usman attempts his own jab, and Collier jabs him back and lands a front kick to the bell as the horn sounds.

Round 2

The heavy hitters meet in the middle, and as Usman paws out a jab, Collier scores a hard leg kick. Collier connects with another, and Usman counters him with a quick punch. Collier’s strategy appears to be answering Usman every time Usman lands on him, and he overswings at times. Usman pushes off, and his finger jams straight into Collier’s eye. Collier yelps in pain and drops to his knees, where he slams his hand on the ground several times. Miragliotta calls in the doctor to check on Collier, who appears to be struggling to see at all out of his right eye. Collier tells the doctor that there is nothing, and he slams his fist on the floor in frustration. The physician informs him he has a few more minutes to recover, instead of simply waving the fight off. Collier stands up, and his vision is once again tested. Collier clears it out, and he signals to the doctor that it is returning. After about four minutes, Collier is good to go, and the fight resumes. Collier initiates the offense again with a few jabs, and he ducks a looping strike. Usman responds with a solid jab, and the two trade blows one after the other. A right hand from Usman tears open a cut on the corner of Collier’s other eye, and Collier wipes at it. The two heavyweights jab at one another, and Usman lands a few effective strikes to follow one. Collier lumbers forward with an overhand right, hurting Usman a bit and driving him back to the fence. Usman gathers his thoughts and pushes away, only for Collier to crack him with a right hook. Usman pushes out a few jabs, and Collier continues to wipe the blood out of his left eye. As Collier advances, Usman connects with a counter uppercut. Jabs come from both men, and Usman drives through a one-two that Collier does not like. Usman continues to bust up his man with his jab, and Collier’s offense dwindles and now features power strikes that miss the mark. Usman has a one-two bounce off the guard, but his jab continues to reach Collier as Collier is struggling to see with the blood on one side and lingering effects from the poke on the other. Collier reaches Usman with a right hand, and he lifts his guard high to defend head shots. This allows Usman to rip a right and a left to the body, which drops Collier’s hands. Collier just misses with a left hook, gets caught with a left from the other side, and the round ends with jabs.

Round 3

Five minutes remain for the two heavyweights, who might be deadlocked on the scores, although momentum is on the side of “The Motor.” Collier recognizes this and starts off strong in the round, with a one-two and a hard leg kick. Collier spins and bails on it halfway through, so that he can get closer to Usman and land a right. Collier connects with a short left hand, and he snaps out jabs until Usman goes after a home run left hook that grazes his hair. Collier sticks out several jabs, and when he commits to a right hand, Usman slides to the side to evade it. Usman loops a right hand that bounces off the guard, and simultaneous jabs lead to both men getting knocked back a step. Collier jabs repeatedly, forcing Usman to attempt a double-leg takedown. Collier gets pushed back to the wall, and Usman elects to change to a single, where he lifts the heavier fighter up in the air and throwing him down to the mat with emphasis. Collier lands hard on his back, and Usman wades into the half guard and starts dropping down ground-and-pound. Collier sits up to thwart big strikes from landing on him, but Usman muscles him back down. Collier leans towards Usman to protect himself from blows, and Usman again pushes him over. Usman hangs on with a potential arm-triangle setup, but he does not pursue a submission and instead is focused on working Collier over with punches and elbows. Usman isolates Collier’s left arm for a possible kimura, and he lets it go so he can focus on trying to step into mount. Usman settles back down in half guard, clinging to Collier with seconds to spare. Collier suddenly snatches hold of a kimura, which he uses to roll Usman over, but time expires before he can do anything more with it.

Round 1

After a round robin of opponent changes, Australia’s Malkoun (7-2, 3-2 UFC) will now settle for taking on late replacement Brundage (8-5, 2-4 UFC), with the latter dropping three straight over the last 10 months. The middleweights will be joined in the cage by referee Mark Smith, who checks them in without them touching gloves. Brundage comes out shot out of a cannon, where he attacks with a head kick before charging towards Malkoun and taking him down. Malkoun powers himself back to his feet, and he gets hold of a single and drags Brundage to his seat. Brundage turns the tables to flip Malkoun over, but the two ultimately scramble well enough to stand. Malkoun doggedly pursues the single, and after two additional tries, Malkoun finally pulls Brundage away from the wall and puts him to his knees. Malkoun slugs his man on the side of the head, and Smith is paying close attention to the proceedings as Brundage is taking fire. Brundage works his way to the fence, where he leans on his side as Malkoun lays into him with strong punches. Brundage looks frustrated, as Malkoun maintains a tough top position where he has his own leg entangled between Brundage’s to keep him grounded. Malkoun continues to beat down on Brundage, and Brundage leans over and puts his hands on the floor in some kind of desperate effort to escape. When Brundage gets a modicum of success, pulling the hook off of his side, Malkoun quickly replaces it and keeps beating on the American. Malkoun uses his left hand to bludgeon Brundage, who is taking punishment and not offering any offense of his own. Malkoun uses a palm-to-palm rear-naked choke to hunt for the choke with full power, and Brundage shakes his head out of it. When Brundage is leaned over, Malkoun blasts Brundage in the back of the head with a mighty elbow. Smith calls time immediately, and he quickly brings in the doctor, as Brundage is in a bad way from the foul. Brundage sits up against the cage, and Smith exits the cage to check replay footage to see the extent of the elbow landing. There is no specific time allotment for this type of foul, and Brundage asks how much time he has to recover when Smith inquires if Brundage can continue. The physician comes in to check on Brundage’s condition again, and Brundage is not ready to resume fighting. The fight is waved off, and due to the directly aimed blow clearly to the back of the head, it could be a disqualification if the strike is deemed intentional by Smith. This is an unfortunate ending to what at the time had been a potential 10-8 round for Malkoun, as 45 seconds remained on the clock with Malkoun in full control.

Round 1

Two all-action welterweights collide with both of their backs up against the proverbial wall, as another defeat could cost them their spot on the UFC roster. With three losses in a row, the 39-year-old Means (32-15-1, 1 NC; 14-12, 1 NC UFC) wants to show he still has something left in the tank, while the Portuguese fighter 10 years his junior in Fialho (16-7, 1 NC; 2-4 UFC) is looking to prove he is worthy of remaining in the marquee MMA league. Referee Dan Miragliotta is prepped and ready for a scrap that could end in the blink of an eye, but before that goes down, they touch ‘em up. Fialho aims a few front kicks to start things off, and Means responds with a straight left to the body. Means doubles up on that strike and kicks the same spot. Fialho connects with a solid low kick, and Fialho overswings only to get grabbed by the longtime veteran. Fialho breaks away, and he looks for a jab only to get countered with two hooks. The fighter from Portugal sets up a right hand when closing the distance, and Means wears it well and looks for a body lock takedown. Fialho tags Means with an uppercut, and Means perfectly counters his opponent with a knee that knocks Fialho down to the ground. Means steps over to full mount, and he clobbers Fialho with ground-and-pound. Fialho scrambles to turn to his side, dragging Means back to side control, but Means continues doing damage with elbows and punches. Fialho explodes back to his feet, and he appears to have his feet back beneath him as he bears down on Means. Fialho unloads with a long series of punches, and Means allows him to get up close and personal so he can pop Fialho with two punches and a knee. Means grabs hold of the younger fighter and initiates a body lock throw, but Fialho lands on his feet. Means presses Fialho up against the wall, and they proceed to work the body on both sides before Fialho escapes. Fialho digs a front kick to the body, and he aims a second to the same place only for it to miss the mark. Means calmly walks forward and slings a hook kick that slaps Fialho in the face, and he counters Fialho with a clubbing left hook when he puts his foot down. Means hangs onto Fialho’s left hand, and he pulls him into a head kick. Means snaps out several jabs as he keeps the pressure on his opponent, and he slides back from a right hand to give Fialho a big left hand to think about. Fialho pounds the midsection with a kick, and Means lands a few punches to the body as well as a knee to conclude the exciting round.

Round 2

The welterweights resume their action in the middle of the cage, and Fialho reaches out with a leg kick first. Means steps in with a left to the midsection, and he chains a front kick into it. Means mixes in a head kick, and Fialho shakes his head and partially deflects a side kick. Fialho crowds Means with a few punches, and he slides away before Means can catch him. Fialho goes to the body, and Means does the same. Means beats Fialho to the punch with a few punches, and a front kick shakes Fialho up badly. Fialho wobbles but bites down on his mouthpiece to throw hammers, and he stings Means with fierce punches. Means looks for a level change, as he had his bell rung, and Fialho shoves him back and continues to do damage. Means weathers the storm and ties Fialho up to gather his thoughts. Fialho turns him around and ties up Means’ leg for a potential trip, but Means thwarts it and continues recovering. Means sneaks in two short punches and drives three knees to the head in rapid succession. Means manages to escape out the side before Fialho can pay him back, and he flicks out a few jabs to keep Fialho honest. Means reaches his man with a one-two, and he pops Fialho in the chops with a short right hook. Means checks a kick as he meanders forward, and he chains several punches into a few knees to the body. Fialho knocks him back with a stern uppercut, and Means resets and jabs up Fialho’s face. Fialho loads up on a few power punches, and Means intercepts him with a knee to the chin. Despite taking the knee flush, Fialho still has his wits about him to grab Means’ leg and deposit him to the canvas. Means scrambles and slides out the back door, where he puts Fialho on his back pressed against the cage wall. Means hacks down with a number of elbows, as he fights through Fialho kicking his legs up. Means, with Fialho on his knees, scores a few punches before lining up a huge knee to the body. Means batters Fialho with ground-and-pound, and the horn sounds.

Round 3

There is a final touch of gloves between the two men, who are itching to keep throwing. Means scores a low calf kick, which trips Fialho up. Fialho gathers himself and pushes off with several front kicks, until Means crashes the pocket and racks him up with an elbow. Fialho opens up with a loud body kick, which spurs Means into responding with a head kick. Fialho wears it well, but as he gets backed up, Means nails him with another. Johns (13-2, 4-2 UFC) will stand before him, amped up and ready for combat. The fighters will be joined in the Octagon by referee Kerry Hatley, who is ready for action. The 135ers do not plan on touching gloves, and instead Johns rushes out of his corner but does not lash out. Johns instead measures his opponent, and he counters an odd-angled kick from Argueta with a big right hook. Johns dips back and fires off a leg kick, and Argueta shoots in for a double at the same time. Johns sprawls and back himself to the fence, and Argueta tries to change it up with a single. Johns defends the second attempt, but Argueta drags him to the mat on the third try. When Johns leans forward towards the fence, Argueta slithers up to take Johns’ back standing. Argueta hooks his legs around Johns and starts fishing for a choke, and he pushes off the fence to not let Johns lean on it to carry their weight. Argueta clings tightly to his man, with his right arm pressed over Johns’ mouth to frustrate him and disrupt his breathing. Argueta softens Johns up with a few punches, and he suddenly tightens up a rear-naked choke grip over Johns’ face and arches his back to drag Johns down with him. Johns survives the submission and pushes away to get back to his feet fearlessly, and he immediately throws a right hand when he is upright. Argueta dodges and looses a head kick that makes him fall over. Johns lets him up and prepares a counter, as Argueta charges him. Argueta walks into a big right hook, and Johns shoves him from one side of the cage to the other. Argueta telegraphs a takedown effort, and Johns turns the corner and thinks about his own level change. “The Determined” wraps up a guillotine choke and jumps guard, and Johns is not concerned with it as he pulls his head out and is on top with 45 seconds to spare. Johns backs off and stands, and he welcomes Argueta back up with a right hook. Johns winds up with power punches, and Argueta fires back and does not flinch when eating big strikes. The close round ends.

Round 2

The second stanza kicks off with an aggressive Argueta, who wades forward but is smart to not get clipped with the waiting counter. Argueta loops a right hand around the guard, and Johns is stung from it. Johns uses Argueta’s momentum against him to pursue a takedown, and Argueta defends with a guillotine choke. Johns again has no concerns about the submission, and he comfortable sits on top without Argueta having the proper leverage to get him. Johns fights out of it and drops down heavy punches, forcing Argueta to scramble madly. “The Determined” powers back to his feet, and his knee meets Johns right on the jaw. Johns again has his bell rung, but he is keeping a stiff upper lip as Argueta may not notice how badly hurt Johns is. Johns circles away, readying a right hook for when Argueta will sprint at him. Argueta does just that, and Johns misses, which lets Argueta dive down after a single that puts Johns on his seat. Johns muscles his way back upright, and Argueta hangs on from behind until his weight pushes Johns back down to one knee. Johns frantically escapes, moves back to the center of the cage, and throws haymakers. Argueta walks into one, and his hair wavers but his determination does not. Argueta continues heading towards his foe, where he goes down low for a double. Johns threatens with a front choke, which allows him to get his full footing. Argueta bails on the attempt to knee his foe in the face, but Johns laughs it off and lets his hands go. Johns drills Argueta with two hefty punches, and Argueta gets knocked back and down to one knee from a subsequent huge right hand. Argueta climbs back up, takes a deep breath, and Johns turns the tables by attacking a single. Johns cannot secure it before the round ends, and it is also extremely tight.

Round 3

The fight possibly hanging in the balance, both men are ready for battle. Johns cocks back his hands and blasts Argueta in the face to reintroduce himself, as Argueta races towards him. Argueta shakes it off and takes a breath before charging for a level change. When Johns prepares for the takedown, Argueta jumps with a knee. Johns snipes Argueta with a few punches, but Argueta is determined as can be at his forward movement and pressure. Johns ducks the telegraphed punches from the grappler, and he belts Argueta in the face with a monstrous left hook. Argueta gets up and comes right back into the pocket, where Johns greets him with devastating punches and surprisingly effective calf kicks. The massive punches from Johns bust open Argueta’s nose, and as Argueta doggedly pursues him, Johns shoots in for a double. Argueta steps over, welcoming this maneuver, and he rolls over to set up an armbar. Johns simply stands up, and when Argueta follows him, Johns busts him in the face. Argueta lands once to eat two big shots, and he watches Johns shoot in for a single and stops it while catching his breath. Johns lets go of that grip and hunts for a double, and he scoops Argueta off the ground and deposits him gingerly to the mat. Argueta defends with a guillotine choke, sucking wind, and Johns barely flinches with not an ounce of panic or concern in his face. Johns pushes off the knee and pops his head out, and Argueta lets it go and immediately spins around to loose an upkick at Johns. Johns leans back and then forward, where he grips a front choke on Argueta and knees him in the top of the head. With seconds to spare, Argueta fights to his feet, and he sprints at Johns with one final attack. Before he can reach his opponent, the final bell rings. The judges will have their hands full here.

Jourdain aims another kick to the midsection, where he leans back from three head kicks – the third grazes off his guard. Ramos tosses out a low kick, and he gets sniped with a right hand over the top. Jourdain slaps a head kick up high, and he grabs hold of a guillotine when Ramos charges towards him for a possible takedown. Ramos jumps over the legs and is in Von Preux position with Jourdain still holding on with the guillotine, and he presses his shoulder down on Jourdain’s throat. Ramos pushes his weight down to keep Jourdain in submission danger, but he lets it go to re-posture himself. Jourdain keeps his left arm around the neck until Ramos wriggles his head out of it, and Ramos looks to sneak into side control while sitting comfortable in half guard. Jourdain turns to his side, and Ramos times this so he can pass. Both men somersault in a wild scramble, and Jourdain recovers first to latch on with a guillotine choke and pulls guard. This time, the submission is extremely tight, and the Brazilian finds himself firmly entrenched in the danger zone. Ramos has no way out, and before going out on his shield, he taps out. This is a huge win for the no-longer-.500 Jourdain, as he becomes the first fighter to submit Ramos since 2016.

With 15 minutes or less to work, the two men are amped up and ready to handle their business. There is no touch of gloves as referee Dan Miragliotta watches on. Battle, the rangier fighter, walks into multiple low kicks from Fletcher. Battle looks to set up distant strikes, and he keeps Fletcher at bay with body and leg kicks. Fletcher chips away with another kick, and he is just out of the way of a jab. Fletcher crashes the pocket to throw three punches, and they all bounce off Battle’s shoulders. Fletcher’s leg continues continue to land, and Battle comes up short with a trio of body kicks. Battle checks a kick, and he pushes off with front kicks from both legs. Battle prods with a front kick, toes outstretched, and Fletcher rushes at him with an overhand right. Battle is surprised but defends himself, and Fletcher attempts another. Battle keeps using his legs for range purposes, reddening up Fletcher’s midsection with the numerous jab-like kicks. Fletcher again has two punches ricochet off the raised guard, and Battle pecks at him with a double jab. The leg kicks keep coming from both fighters, and Battle feeds his foe a steady diet of push kicks. Fletcher reaches his man with a right hand, and he lines up a stern leg kick to follow. Battle pushes him back with the ball of his foot, but Fletcher comes back firing with looping hooks. Battle intercepts “The Ghost” with his front kicks, and he has a head kick blocked in the nick of time. Battle turns his shin in to check a kick, and he defends against a charging takedown from Fletcher. From up close, Fletcher rips an elbow that shocks Battle, who drops to his knees and springs back up. Fletcher does not give chase, instead letting Battle get his sea legs back until the round ends.

Round 2

The fighters touch gloves to start off this round, and Battle is more interested in throwing punches right out of the gate. Battle presses the action, backing Fletcher off early with strikes mixed together effectively. Fletcher gets frustrated at not being able to reach his adversary, and he closes the distance and pursues a takedown. The TUF winner shucks it off and turns the corner, where he starts ripping knees to the body from up close in the clinch. Battle carries on his consistent knee strategy as Fletcher cannot get out of land back effectively, and the numbers start adding up in a hurry. Battle drops down in pursuit of a takedown, and Fletcher snatches up a guillotine choke to stop Battle from succeeding. Battle instead powers all the way through it rather than pulling back, which allows him to bowl Fletcher over and move to half guard. Battle considers a straight armlock or kimura as he wrenches on Fletcher’s left arm, but he abandons it when his corner tells him not to waste his time. Battle smacks him with a number of unanswered left hands, and Fletcher attempts to turn to his side to quell the slow but methodical beating. When Fletcher bucks, Battle smartly keeps tightly pressed to him to not move. Fletcher turns to his knees and gives up his back, and Battle almost instantly grabs hold of a rear-naked choke. The grip slides beneath the chin, and Fletcher is done like dinner. Fletcher’s eyes go wide and he nearly goes out, only for him to surrender just in time before going to sleep. “The Butcher” releases the submission when Miragliotta intervenes, and he calmly walks away to celebrate with his elated team.

Some three-plus years later, the promotion has decided to run it back, with both ladies slumping and in dire need of a win. Whether the Brazilian woman can go 2-0 or the Jackson-Wink staple can avenge a defeat and snap a three-fight skid, referee Kerry Hatley will be there for it. The sixth round begins, and there is no touch of gloves. Instead, Waterson-Gomez is hyper-aggressive, and she practically runs at the Brazilian and takes her down to the ground by tripping Rodriguez’ legs up. Waterson-Gomez lands in the full guard of her opponent, which closes around her, and she connects with a few punches before Rodriguez starts to scramble. Rodriguez hand-fights to keep additional strikes from landing, and she pushes Waterson-Gomez off of her and manages to stand back up thanks to swaying upkicks. Waterson-Gomez practically leaps at her to keep her hands on her, and Rodriguez answers with a few stern knees to the body. Waterson-Gomez looks to stay up close, but she is driven back with one particular vicious knee that appears to take the wind out of her sails. Waterson-Gomez desperately pursues a takedown to stop the clinch strikes from landing, and Rodriguez frames off and blasts Waterson-Gomez with elbows and knees. Waterson-Gomez tries to throw back and covers up, and with Rodriguez laying into her with strikes, she runs forward for a takedown. Rodriguez stuffs her and puts her on her knees, and she lets Waterson-Gomez stand up so she can punish her with clinch strikes. Blood sprays from the mouth of the Jackson-Wink fighter, who is eating a seeming unending barrage of knees and elbows that have slashed open a cut on the side of her eye along with nearly putting Waterson-Gomez away. Waterson-Gomez flails back with everything she has, and Rodriguez beats her down and further bloodies her with knees, elbows, and anything she has to offer. Waterson-Gomez looks for a takedown to survive, and Rodriguez pushes her away. Hatley calls time, and he brings in the doctor to survey the damage. Waterson-Gomez tells them she is good to continue, and with about 25 seconds to go in the round, they resume. Waterson-Gomez smiles, with blood pouring down her face, but she is not defeated. Rodriguez counters a takedown and hurls Waterson-Gomez down to her back, and Waterson-Gomez clings to her until the bell rings.

Between rounds, Waterson-Gomez spits and coughs up blood, but she is still able to continue after the brutal shellacking from the last round. Waterson-Gomez is tough, and she is ready and rearing to go, no matter the face-changing damage she has sustained thus far. Waterson-Gomez comes out more cautious than the last round, and she allows Rodriguez to close in on her so she can turn things around and go after a trip. This lets her not walk into nasty strikes or hang out in the clinch where she met the wood chipper in the last round, but Rodriguez is excited to put her back in harm’s way. Waterson-Gomez gets shoved to the mat, and she springs back up as Rodriguez walks her down mercilessly. Waterson-Gomez reaches her foe with a right hand, and Rodriguez meets her with a few close strikes when they clinch. Waterson-Gomez answers with a single knee, but the knee that comes back from the Brazilian is multiple times fiercer. Rodriguez pummels Waterson-Gomez with knees to the body and elbows up top, and Waterson-Gomez leans forward to try for a body lock takedown. Rodriguez simply muscles her down to the ground, where she lands in mount, and she opens up with elbows. As Waterson-Gomez turns to her side, totally defeated, Rodriguez lays it on with a few more punches. Hatley jumps between them, saving Waterson-Gomez from her own toughness after a hellacious beating. In victory, Rodriguez records just the second knockout of the ultra-durable Waterson-Gomez, who last succumbed to strikes back in 2009.

On the other hand, the Hawaiian is hunting for his third win in a row, which would continue his run up the logjammed featherweight division. Referee Mark Smith draws the charge for this big fight, and he looks confused when Mitchell grabs a bible out of his cornerman’s hand and holds it up while screaming “Freedom.” When that odd moment ends, Smith clocks them in. There is no glove touch, as Mitchell is on a mission. Ige jabs to start the fight, and he counters a kick from Mitchell with a hard right hook. Mitchell wears it well and backs off when Ige chases after him to land a few punches. Mitchell pushes off with a side kick, and Ige misses a hook by a matter of inches. Ige clips “Thug Nasty” with a right hand, and Mitchell leaps at him to go after a double. Ige pushes him over, lands a punch that slips open a cut on Mitchell’s left cheek, and backs off. Ige is calm as a cucumber as he measures his opponent, and his third hook connects on the chin. Mitchell charges for a takedown attempt, and Ige defends the first try but gets tossed down on the second effort. Ige works his way back up and separates without much concern, and he blitzes with a winging right hook that just misses. Ige doubles up on a jab, and he counters a low kick with a left hook. As Mitchell recoils from the blow, his kick slaps into Ige’s cup. Ige is good to go, and Mitchell offers an apology from the accidental foul. Mitchell runs at Ige, where he does not get the takedown but does push Ige to the wall. The Hawaiian defends until he doesn’t, as Mitchell uses a body lock to put Ige on his back. “Thug Nasty” lands in full mount, and Ige defends himself from any ground strikes. Mitchell sets up an arm-triangle choke, and Ige bucks to stop it. Ige turns to his side, swaying around to dodge all but a pair of punches. The round ends with Mitchell riding on top.

Ige starts off the round flicking out several jabs, looking for his range so he can follow one with an overhand right. Mitchell pushes off with a front kick, and Ige belts him in the face with a left and a devastating right. Mitchell grimaces in pain and shoots in for a double, only to get turned around and elbows in the side of the head a few times. Ige stands him up, and the two jockey for position in the clinch. The Hawaiian slips away to restart in striking range, and damage has developed above and below Mitchell’s right eye. Ige loops a big hook on the busted eye, which splits open an enormous cut and draws some swelling. Smith calls time and brings in the doctor, but she clears Mitchell in a few seconds when Mitchell states he can see. When they resume, Mitchell tries for a naked takedown, and Ige tackles him over and lands on top. As Mitchell defends with rubber guard, Ige thinks better of the situation and stands back up. Mitchell follows after him, and he dives down after an ankle. Ige hops out of the way, parries a front kick and lands a right hand on the temple. Ige walks into a short left hand, and Mitchell times Ige’s blitz to take him off his feet and land right in mount. Ige keeps moving, turning to a side and then his knee. Mitchell follows him and takes his back with Ige leaning on the fence on his knees. “Thug Nasty” wrenches his right arm on the chin of his opponent, and he gets both hooks in and tries to flatten the Hawaiian out. Ige looks to slide out the back door, and Mitchell does not let him off the hook as he turns over to attack an arm-triangle choke. Ige defends it as Mitchell has him mounted, punching Mitchell in the side a few times. Mitchell lets go with the choke, and Ige bucks as the round comes to a close.

Mitchell is once more cleared to keep fighting, even with the swollen eye and the serious cut above it. Ige peppers that damaged eye immediately when the last round kicks off, with a number of jabs. Mitchell replies with a body kick, and he runs at Ige to grab hold of a single. Ige gets taken down, but he is quick to power back to his feet even with Mitchell clinging to him. Ige turns Mitchell over, until Mitchell slides his legs around to keep the back take intact. Mitchell locks down a body triangle, and he switches it to the other side when Ige tries to break it. Ige slowly, calmly looks to spin in this position, and Mitchell hangs on without offering any offense of his own. When Ige is about to escape, Mitchell slithers over to take mount while Ige is on his back. Ige still manages to get upright, and Mitchell stays tight to him like a cheap suit. Ige leans up against the fence and shakes Mitchell with all his might to get some space. Mitchell elects to lift Ige completely off the ground to throw him down, and Ige lands and switches things around to turn Mitchell to his seat. Mitchell grips both of his hands on Ige’s left arm for a possible armlock, and Ige keeps tight from on top. Ige sits up to lean on Mitchell, and he moves into mount with 10 seconds to spare. Ige is unable to land anything until the horn sounds, and this fight could go either way depending on how the second round is scored.

Two men – plus referee Herb Dean – enter, and one man will leave, figuratively speaking. The two contenders are intense but fully respectful, despite competing for rival camps of Kill Cliff FC and American Top Team, respectively. Fists are bumped, and they are about to be traded. Both men look for the middle of the cage to start off, and they do not throw a single strike the first 30 seconds. One finally comes, with a jab from Gamrot. Fiziev jabs the body in response, and he scrapes the midsection with a body kick. Gamrot gets off a leg kick, and he hops back when Fiziev feints towards him. Gamrot comes up missing the mark with a head kick, and Fiziev also throws an inaccurate strike up high. Gamrot steps through a jab to lands a right hand on the chin, and Fiziev does not even budge. When Gamrot attempts this blitz a second time, Fiziev strings together five punches in rapid succession to force the Polish fighter to retreat. They fire off low kicks at the same time, and Gamrot’s foot comes up and pops the cup. They both bump fists after the foul and do not take a moment. Fiziev reaches his man with a right hand, and Gamrot shoots down low as he possibly can to lift Fiziev’s leg up in the air. Fiziev miraculously stays on his feet from the attempt, and he skirts away and resets. Fiziev works the body with a kick, and he cannot avoid a one-two that comes back his way. Gamrot has a high kick glance off the shoulder, and Fiziev returns fire with a strike to the body. Fiziev swipes a right to the body, and he partially deflects a leg kick. Gamrot parries a body kick, and he springs forward with a double jab. Fiziev misses with a front kick and is able to escape a trio of punches from his opponent. Gamrot does reach his man with a jab, only for Fiziev to reply with a front kick up the middle. Fiziev hammers the lead leg with a kick that sets Gamrot down, and Gamrot spins and works his way back up without issue. Gamrot races after Fiziev, looking for another takedown, and a fast and furious scramble ensues as Fiziev hits his seat and pops up. The horn sounds, and both men high five after the final exciting exchange.

Round 2

The lightweights bump fists to open the second round, and Gamrot is the initial aggressor. This leads him to walking into a body kick, but he presses forward to pursue a takedown. Fiziev wildly moves out of the way from the first and second attempts, but Gamrot successfully grounds him on the third effort that is chained together. Fiziev works his way towards the wall, and Gamrot looks to hold his weight on him and drag Fiziev down. Gamrot hunts for a trip, a single, a double, or anything he can muster, and Fiziev is a stone wall for this grappling exchange. Fiziev manages to push away, and he winds up and fires a body kick that pounds into Gamrot’s torso and lands with a loud thump. As Fiziev pulls it back, his left knee torques the wrong way, and Fiziev collapses and yelps in pain. Not knowing exactly what happened, Gamrot sprints towards his fallen foe and swings a few punches, and Dean is quick to rush to Fiziev’s aid and call in the medical staff. Before realizing that his opponent suffered an injury, Gamrot sprints over to his corner, where he lets out several shouts of victory. Gamrot’s excitement cools quickly when he discovers that Fiziev is hurt, and he appears saddened about this. Despite the result, Gamrot does emerge the victor and is looking towards the future. In his post-fight interview, while he states his ultimate goal is to fight champ Islam Makhachev, he does not believe he is ready for that. Instead, he calls for a fight against who he perceives to be the most dangerous grappler in the division, Charles Oliveira. Unfortunately for Gamrot, Oliveira’s dance card is full at the moment, as Oliveira will be rematching Makhachev next month for his old belt.
